My research interests focus on the use of rhetorical and discursive social psychology to analyse political discourse. For my PhD, I am exploring how politicians debated calls for a second referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union. Using data from parliamentary debates, I aim to analyse the ways in which politicians formulated their positions as being consistent with the norms of democracy. Of particular interest is the ways in which politicians sought to minimise their own stake and interest in the issue, seeking to avoid the implication that their position was based on narrow sectional interests.
