Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Information Event

Date: 7 February 2024
Time: 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: In person

Do you think students with additional needs are treated fairly in the classroom? Do you feel men can access mental health support as easily as women at Heriot-Watt?

We invite you to learn about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in our School at our information lunch (free, and with coffee!).

The Event

  • Student and Staff speakers discussing how to support each other against harassment
  • Take part in our quiz to test your awareness of your EDI rights and opportunities in SoSS
  • Find out how to make your voice heard by becoming a member of the Athena Swan SAT

What is Athena Swan?
Athena Swan is “a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research”. You can read more about it here: https://www.advance-he.ac.uk/equality-charters/athena-swan-charter. An example principle of this framework states the need for HE institutions to address structural inequalities and social injustices that manifest as differential experiences and outcomes for staff and students.

What is the SoSS Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team?
The Self-Assessment Team aims to include students and staff at all levels https://www.hw.ac.uk/uk/schools/social-sciences/staff/athena-swan-at-soss.htm. Our task is to prepare, write and submit an application for Athena Swan Bronze accreditation for the school. This involves providing a status quo report of diversity and equality at SoSS (e.g., proportion of male and female applicants and graduates) and propose actions to improve it.
